Department of Human Services

Department offers array of services to residents of Woodbridge, including: Fuel Assistance, Emergency Food Assistance, Adult Health Clinic, Flu-shot Clinic, Volunteer Support Programs, Medical Equipment Closet and services by Municipal Agent for the Elderly. The department 
provides information, referral and outreach concerning health and social programs available to residents and is available for assistance to older residents in applying for various programs. Trained CHOICES Health Insurance Counselors are available to provide counseling and information on topics such as Medicare, Medicaid, Medicare Supplement Insurance, Medicare HMOs, Long-Term Care Insurance, and other state and federal benefits programs.

Human Services sponsors Friendly Visitor/Telephone Reassurance Program in which volunteers make visits and/or phone calls to those homebound or isolated.

The Woodbridge Center

Five days a week the Center, operated by Woodbridge Human Services, offers to residents who are 60 and older and disabled residents: exercise and community-building programs highlighting health, wellness, the arts, education, recreation, and entertainment.

Elderly Luncheon Program provides nutritious hot meal, Tues. & Fri., 12:15 p.m. Reservations required at least day in advance.

Medical Loan Closet provides portable medical equipment (walkers, wheelchairs, commodes, etc.) to Woodbridge residents on an on-loan basis.

Transportation Services

Woodbridge seniors and disabled can obtain transportation through Senior Center Elderly Transportation Program and Greater New Haven Transit District.
Elderly Transportation Program for the Senior Center provides limited transportation on first come, first served basis to Senior Center, to Amity Stop & Shop (Wed. only) and to medical appointments as scheduling permits. Reservations required. Call: 203-389-3430.

Greater New Haven Transit District with office in Hamden, has three programs relevant to Woodbridge seniors:

Library Services to the Homebound

Woodbridge Town Library, in conjunction with Woodbridge Human Services Department, offers delivery of library materials to the homebound. Through this program full library service is offered to those in the community who are elderly and unable to come to the library and to those who are permanently or temporarily disabled and who do not have transportation. By calling the library, residents can request books, including large-print titles and books on tape, magazines, CDs, and DVDs. The Woodbridge Center will arrange delivery of requested materials to the homebound patrons. WATCH: Woodbridge Awareness to Crime and Home Safety

Through WATCH, the Police Department, Human Services and Senior Center cooperate in several free programs aimed at promoting safety of senior citizens and disabled. Call for details.

• Beacon Lights. Beacons equipped to flash when switch is flipped twice are distributed to Woodbridge seniors and disabled so as to help police or fire personnel locate scene of emergency quickly.
• Used Cell Phones. Residents encouraged to drop off cell phones, batteries, chargers in good condition at Town Hall or Senior Center for distribution to those over 60 or disabled.
